Dancefusion Mission: Dancefusion is a modern dance repertory company. We are dedicated to both the reconstruction of historic works from America's rich record of modern dance, and the creation of innovative work. Dancefusion lives and relives the achievements of the past and explores new choreographic directions for the future by 1) reconstructing historic works; 2) introducing new choreography; 3) providing dance training through programs and educational residencies for the community; 4) nurturing a training company for young dancers, "fusion2" and; 5) expanding public awareness through programs and performance to diverse audiences.

Dancefusion History: Dancefusion was founded by artistic Director Gwendolyn Bye in 1987, it has presented annual home seasons and numerous dances and teaching residencies in the Greater Philadelphia area for 20 years. The company has reconstructed historic works by Mary Anthony, Pauline Koner, Anna Sokolow and José Limón. It has also created new works by artistic director Bye, company members and guest choreographers Colin Connor, Kun-Yang Lin, David Konyk and Myra Bazell. Dancefusion has been presented at Philadelphia Dances, “2000feet” a Celebration of World Dance, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia Presenting Project at the Annenberg Center, DanceBoom! at Wilma Theater, and the Merce Cunningham Studio/Theater in New York City.

In 2003 Dancefusion received Dance Advance funding to reconstruct Anna Sokolow’s Time + (1968) which was presented in Dance Boom 2004 at the Wilma Theater and again in Dancefusion’s 2004 season at the Painted Bride Art Center. The program also featured the reconstruction of Sokolow’s Quartertones (1974), a new work by Bye, and a work from repertory. In March 2005 through support from the Philadelphia Presenting Project, Dancefusion presented “Celebrate,” its home season in a shared program with Kun-Yang Lin/Dance Company at the Annenberg Center. The program featured Dancefusion’s reconstruction of Sokolow’s masterpiece Rooms (1955). In December 2005 Dancefusion presented its holiday concert The Twelve Days of Christmas at the Iron Gate Theater to a sold out audience. That same month Dancefusion reconstructed Mary Anthony’s Women of Troy (1954) through a second grant from Dance Advance and hosted a five-day dance workshop with Donald McKayle and Mary Anthony. This work was presented in Dancefusion’s season at the Painted Bride Art Center in February 2006.

The program included two historic solos Lady Macbeth by Anthony and Shuvi Nafshi by Hadassah danced by guest artist Mary Ford of the Jose Limón Dance Company. In July 2006, Dancefusion partnered with Drexel University sponsoring a symposium on dance preservation and presented “Age and Passion” a documentary on the reconstruction of Anthony’s Women of Troy. A panel discussion followed with Mary Anthony, composer Elliott Weiss, archive experts Linda Caruso Haviland from Bryn Mawr College and dance educator/reconstructor Ruth Andrien from Paul Taylor. Dancefusion presented its 19th home season concert along with guest company Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers on February 2007 at the Harold Prince Theater.
