Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center Highlights

This past year, GBDC offered over 45 weekly year-round dance classes and presented 6 productions. Our June Recital Classical Elements featured all 150 students from GBDC in choreography by faculty at the Suzann Roberts Theatre on June 9. In the spring we presented our Musical Theater class in As You Like it at the Community Education Center (CEC). Our 6-week summer program culminated in a Summer Showcase at the CEC on August 3.

December 2017 GBDC students performed with Dancefusion in the revival of the wonderful holiday show, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas performed at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre along with the junior company, fusion2. Choreographed by Artistic Director Gwendolyn Bye and company alumni, Suellen Haag, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas is complete with pirouetting sugar plumes, frolicking mice, prancing reindeer along with a Christmas tree which all come to life for a midnight romp after the residents of the house have “settled down for a long winters nap”. Let’s not forget a visit from that jolly old elf - St. Nick himself! Based on the famous Christmas poem by Clement Moore, the story unfolded in front of imaginative scenery with authentic costumes and colorful holiday decorations that added to the festivities.

Our prior year offered year-round classes, presented 6 productions and in 2016-17 offered an after-school dance program to students at two local elementary schools: Samuel Powell School and McMichael School. This program provided an excellent opportunity for students from inner-city schools to enjoy a dance experience in a professional studio. Our June Recital, The World Dances was held at the New Freedom Theater and our spring Musical Theater class, celebrated music director David Lodge’s 80th Birthday with the performance of Love Labors Lost at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center. Our summer program was presented at the CEC that August and we were delighted to include 5 students from the Turks and Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation.
